The Medaille Militaire certificate is a nice parchment certificate dated 25th June 1855 and awarded to Sergeant Victor Cadorel of the 86th Regiment of Line Infantry. The medal is a later copy, albeit a very good copy, on an original ribbon and with an old ribbon clasp made by E&E Emanuel Portsmouth.
The 86th Regiment of Line Infantry were formed in 1854 by a renumbering of the 11th Light Infantry. In 1855 they took part in the Siege of Sebastopol. The group comes with copy research which shows that Sergeant Victor Cadorel was recommended for the Medaille Militaire, the citation being "full of courage and energy, he was shot in the leg". His service papers show that he was discharged from the army due to his wound, having served over 18 years including 10 on active campaigns.
Prior to its involvement in the Crimea the regiment had served in Algeria for five years and also saw action in Paris in 1848 against the Paris Commune of that year. These are certainly among the service which Cadorel saw with the unit prior to his discharge.
