The Finnish Red Cross was founded on 7 May 1877 to tend sick and wounded members of the Finnish Guard during Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Following Finland becoming independent after the end of World War I, the Finnish Red Cross was recognised by the I.C.R.C. in 1920. The Red Cross decorations were instituted on 20 February 1931 for meritorious service.
