On 28 January 1573 a rebellion broke out on the borders of present-day Croatia and Slovenia in response to harsh treatment by Baron Ferenc Tahy with the aim of establishing a peasant government led by Matija Gubec responsible directly to the Emperor and abolishing feudal holdings and the privileges of the Roman Catholic Church.  

A series of battles culminating at Stubicko Polje on 9 February 1573 led to the defeat of the peasants and the capture, torture and execution of Gubec on 15 February that year and the imprisonment and execution of many other rebels but the revolt continues to inspire writers, artists and film makers to this day.
