A lovely example of the 1940-45 Belgian War Commemorative Medal with some very rare bars. The rarest of the bars are Bat d'Angleterre (Battle of Britain) and Dieppe. The Battle of Britain bar was given to Belgian aircrew who served with the RAF during the battle. Only 29 Belgian pilots qualified for this. The Dieppe bar was given to Belgian pilots who provided air support for the Dieppe Raid.

The other bars are for service in the Belgian Ardennes prior to Belgium's defeat, and for service over France and Germany post D-Day. The crossed swords indicate that the receipient was a combatant.

Unlike British awards, in Belgium the award is granted by certificate and then the recipient purchases his/her medals. Hence, even though there are only 29 men entitled to the Battle of Britain bar, and few of them would also have earned the Dieppe bar, there will have been a higher number produced. However this medal is correctly mounted and has holes in the ribbon where it has been suspended by a double prong fitting, as often used on Belgian and French medals.
